During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
